Newton Kara Jose is graduated in Medicine in 1963 at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is PhD in Medicine area Ophthalmology at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He is currently Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the Medical School of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has a marked presence in Brazil and abroad in social ophthalmology, mainly coordinating campaigns for eradicating cataracts in the poor population with low access to medical services.
